S.E.E.D. may be just what you are looking for! The National S.E.E.D. Project on Inclusive Curriculum began in 1987 and has established seminars for teachers and college staff throughout the U.S. and abroad. The SEED initiative has been in existence at Century College for six years. The mission of this initiative is to support the efforts of Century faculty and staff in personal and professional awareness, self-assessment and growth which will support creating a safer and affirming environment for all students and employees. SEED 1 is the first year experience with SEED. The meetings are facilitated by faculty members who have attended a week-long intensive SEED facilitator training. Seminar topics include gender, race, class, culture and many other diversities of experience. Participants can expect to be involved in a variety of activities during the seminar meetings including discussions of reading, videos, exercises, journaling, and guest speakers. In addition to personal growth, the focus of each meeting is on resources members can use in the classroom or when working with students. The SEEDfolks group is made up staff and faculty that have participated in past SEED 1 seminars and have chosen to continue further exploration into issues relating to equity and diversity. Some members have participated all six years that SEED has been at Century. In addition to learning new information, the group gives support and feedback to each other as we encounter diversity issues with our students and colleagues. SEEDfolks has also initiated several projects on campus including: hanging framed diversity posters on the College walls, presenting the Laramie Project play, bringing the Speak Up! book to campus, offering workshops on how to incorporate it in the classroom, and providing Ally Training. Century College is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities System. The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system is an Equal Opportunity employer and educator.
